Pacey Woodcraft began a few years ago when I took up wood turning as a hobby. I discovered pen turning as an offshoot not long after that and I was hooked. At first, I was making them for immediate family, friends, and colleagues. I soon began to realize that folks enjoy a good pen - especially when the design and materials are chosen specifically to suit a person or their interests. Things continued to evolve after I settled in the beautiful Victorian town of Kingsville, Ontario, Canada in the spring of 2019.
I gave this project my Mum's family name. It seemed appropriate as the most natural thing in the world was for her to have pen in hand, always writing letters, making lists & doing crosswords.
Every turner develops their own process for their craft, and those processes can vary greatly from one turner to another, I'm certainly no exception, having spent countless hours developing and refining my approach, with a view to giving people the best quality handcrafted item I can. I've often heard that as people get better at their craft, they also get faster at it. While there is truth in that, my experience has been a little different. As I experiment with different approaches and discover new materials, I've end up adding steps to my process in a constant effort to refine the final results. This ultimately means that it takes more time, but a quality-driven item is more satisfying to make.
Aside from the items that I carry on this website, a large part of this project is creating custom pens designed as client-specific personal gifts, corporate gifts, and of course to commemorate special occasions. Most designs start as a discussion with a client about who the gift is for, and evolve from there.
Cursive is indeed alive and well.
